Early Life and Education

Zaheer Khan was born on October 7, 1978 in Shrirampur, Maharashtra, India to parents Bakhtiyar and Zakia Khan. He has an elder brother named Zeeshan and a younger brother named Anees.

In his early years, Zaheer developed interest in cricket watching the Indian Cricket team’s victories in the ’90s. As such, he took up professional training at the National Cricket Club of India. His educational achievements include a high school certificate from the New Marathi Primary School and KJ Somaiyya Secondary School in Sakalwara.

Career as a Cricketer

The Beginning of Career

Zaheer made his first-class debut for Baroda during the 1999–2000 season. By late 2000 he was selected for the national team to play against Bangladesh. Although this wasn’t a very impactful match, it opened doors for opportunities in international cricket for him.

Breaking Through The Ranks

In 2006, Zaheer signed with Worcestershire County Cricket Club in England as one of their overseas players. He had remarkable performances there which led him back into International cricket. In September 2007, he was appointed vice-captain of the national side.

Becoming One of The Best

Zaheer continued to excel over the next few seasons, earning accolades as one of the world’s best bowlers. His career reached new heights during the World Cup tournament in 2011 where he emerged as the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Shahid Afridi.

Awards And Achievements

Over the course of his career, Zaheer has received a number of awards and honours. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2011, India’s second highest sporting award by the Government of India. In addition, he was also named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2008.

Personal Life

Zaheer married Bollywood actress Sagarika Ghatge on November 23, 2017. Apart from playing cricket, Zaheer owns a restaurant chain called “ZK’s” which is located in Pune and Mumbai.

Retirement

Zaheer Khan announced his retirement from international and first-class cricket on October 15, 2015 concluding an illustrious career spanning over 14 years. Even after retirement, he remained connected with cricket via commentary stints and training young Indian pacers as a mentor for IPL team ‘Delhi Capitals’.
