Early Life of Shaheen Shah Afridi
Born on 6th April 2000 in the Khyber Agency (now part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), northwestern Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi is an internationally acclaimed cricketer who has brought glory and honor for his country. He comes from a Pashtun family with sports-oriented roots – he is one of seven brothers, five of whom have played cricket at the district level. Shaheen caught the attention of talent scouts early on as a tall fast bowler.
Youths Career
Afridi’s potential was recognized when he participated in trials conducted by the Lahore Qalandars franchise at sixteen. He was groomed further by Aqib Javed, former Pakistani international cricketer turned coach. His notable performances in Islamabad’s regional Under-16 tournament quickly led him to the national team for that age group.
Career Highlights
Shaheen made his first-class debut for Khan Research Laboratories during the 2017–18 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy on September 26, 2017. Following this, he entered List A cricket for Federally Administered Tribal Areas in the same season’s National One Day Cup. In the subsequent Pakistan Super League, Afridi became popular after making crucial breakout performances while playing for Lahore Qalandars.
Pakistani International Team Career
In April 2018, Afridi found himself selected in Pakistan’s Test squad for their tours to Ireland and England. Afridi then debuted in ODIs (One-Day Internationals) against Afghanistan during Asia Cup hosted by UAE later that year before making his T20I (Twenty20 International) entrance versus West Indies.
Recognition and Achievement
In recognition of his outstanding performances, Afridi was awarded the coveted PCB Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award in 2020. During ICC World Cup 2019, he became the youngest to take a five-wicket haul at the age of 19, which is an extraordinary milestone for any cricketer.
