Early Life
Born on 20 September 1998, Rashid Khan is a renowned cricketer from Afghanistan. He was born in Nangarhar, a province located towards Eastern Afghanistan. Like many of his compatriots, he had to witness war and adversities at a very young age.
Youth Career
Rashid’s cricket journey began with tape-ball cricket when he was just ten years old. His exceptional performances won him an opportunity to train with the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s National Academy. Despite his challenging background, Rashid used it as motivation and soon progressed through the ranks.
International Career
Rashid made his One-Day International (ODI) debut for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe in October 2015. He impressed everyone with his leg-spinning skills and showed immense potential despite being only seventeen years old at the time.
Rise to Fame
In March 2017, Rashid single-handedly led his team to victory against Ireland by taking six wickets for just 43 runs. This performance catapulted him into international stardom and established him as one of the best spinners around that time.
Captaincy Role
Following an impressive spell of success, Rashid was named the captain of Afghanistan cricket team in all formats of the game in July 2019. The responsibility did not hamper his personal form as he continued to excel both as a player and as a leader.
IPL Career
Rashid has also tasted significant success in Indian Premier League (IPL), where he represents Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was picked up by them in the auctions prior to IPL season of 2017 for a hefty amount of INR 4 crores. Rashid’s performance was instrumental in Sunrisers reaching the final that year.
Awards and Achievements
Rashid’s extraordinary skills have won him numerous accolades, including ICC Associate Cricketer of the Year award in 2018. His consistent performances also helped Afghanistan achieve test status – a historic moment for his country.
