Introduction

Gautam Gambhir, born on October 14th, 1981 in New Delhi, is a well-known former Indian cricketer. Regarded as one of the best opening batsmen India has ever seen, he played an integral role in helping India secure its victories in the ICC World Twenty20 (2007) and ICC Cricket World Cup (2011).

Early Life & Career Start

Born and brought up in Delhi, Gautam Gambhir’s love for cricket started at an early age under the guidance of his coach Lalchand Rajput. He made his first-class debut with the Delhi cricket team in the 1999-2000 season. Later, he completed his grooming at the prestigious National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

Career Highlights

In December 2004, Gautam Gambhir debuted in international test cricket against Australia and later that year, he also made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Bangladesh. Recognized for his ability to hold one end tight during crucial matches, Gambhir’s career highlight was when he played match-winning innings in both finals of the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 and ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.

Retirement & Post-Cricket Career

Gambhir retired from all forms of cricket on December 3rd, 2018 after a two-decade-long illustrious career. After retirement from cricket, Gambhir stepped into politics by joining Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In May 2019 elections, he was elected Member of Parliament from East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.

Awards & Achievements

Known for his exemplary skills and contributions to cricket, Gambhir was awarded the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy by the ICC in 2009. Additionally, he received the Arjuna Award (India’s second-highest sporting award) in 2008 for his achievements in cricket.

Personal Life

Gambhir is married to Natasha Jain and they have two daughters together: Aazeen and Anaiza. He also runs a foundation named ‘Gautam Gambhir Foundation’ which aims at supporting the underprivileged sections of society.
