Early Life and Education
Anil Kumble was born on October 17, 1970 in Bengaluru, India into a Kannada family. His parents guided his academic interests towards engineering which led to his enrollment at Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering for Mechanical Engineering.
Sports Inclination
Affectionately known as ‘Jumbo’ due to his tall stature, Kumble’s interest in cricket started during school days playing street cricket. He was encouraged by his brother Dinesh who he idolized. During college studies, he successfully took part in University matches improving his cricket skills significantly.
Career Start in Cricket
Kumble stepped onto the professional ground with Ranji Trophy season 1989-90 where he represented Karnataka. Performance noted there even facilitated him for Test debut against England in Manchester August 1990.
High Point: An Invincible Bowler
In early period of his career ending 1990s he already experienced highs and lows but biggest success arrived in 1999 when we took all ten wickets in an inning against Pakistan becoming only second one after Jim Laker from England. Among teammates he became more than just effective bowler boosting team morale with opponent batters facing psychological pressure because of him.
Captaincy and Retirement
On November 2007, following resignation of outgoing captain Rahul Dravid, Kumble was named Indian Test Cricket team’s captain leading it for approximately year until retirement announcement directly after concluding the third test against Australia on November 2008.
Follwing Career Steps
Kumble continued connection with cricket post retirement also engaging himself into several roles like coaching Royal Challengers Bangalore team later Indian cricket team. He served as Chairman of ICC (International Cricket Council) cricket committee & even became Managing Director of Tenvic sports, a company promoting sports at grass-root level.
Awards and Honors
For his outstanding contribution to the sport, Kumble received several awards including Padma Shri in 2005 from Indian Government making him fourth cricketer after Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Chandu Borde to receive prestigious award. Recognizing body’s lifetime achievements he was also honored by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack as one among five Cricketers of Year 1996.
